Home renovations 'can make a property more attractive'

Installing a new kitchen or bathroom into a home could make it more attractive to buyers, according to an expert.

Jane Walmsley, area sales director at Your Move, has stated that while the credit crunch means that improvements may not improve the value of a home, they could make it more saleable than its rivals.

She explained that when people such as first-time buyers are looking for a property, in the current economic situation they are likely to go for one that is "best value in terms of what you''ve got to do with it".

"A new kitchen or bathroom will certainly make it more saleable," she added.

"You would struggle to sell a property without them when you''ve got loads on the market and people are reducing to whatever they need to reduce to to sell."

In recent research by estate agency group Spicerhaart, over 70 per cent of agents claimed that a kitchen is one of the most worthwhile home improvements a property owner can make.
