Loft conversion 'the most valuable home improvement'

Loft conversions are the most valuable home improvement available to property owners, according to research.

A new study by GE Money Home Lending has found that a conversion can add around £23,000 to the value of a home, making it ideal for those looking to make a profit when selling their property.

The other most valuable changes that can be made to a home include an extension, which adds an average of nearly £20,000 to a property price, and a conservatory, which can be worth over £12,000.

Gerry Bell, head of mortgage marketing at GE Money Home Lending, said: "Before embarking on any improvements, it pays to know which ones will add the most value to your property."

He added that the property type and location of a house can also determine which home improvements are the best value.

Recent research by Alliance & Leicester found that nearly 40 per cent of people who have sold a property in recent years have made improvements to increase its saleability.
